TOWARDS THE SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

Playing sports and running are beneficial activities for people, especially if carried out in natural environments. However, an important question arises:
is it equally beneficial for nature to be traversed by 2,000 people in just two days?

An organisation and its participants have the power to mitigate environmental damage and give back to nature some of what it gives us,
helping to reduce the impacts of their passage.

The Campo dei Fiori Trail - among the first Trail Running races in Italy - has chosen to draw up a sustainability report by collecting the most significant data for assessing the environmental impact and producing a report that will allow us to quantify the sustainability of our event and enable us to improve each year
A courageous choice that demonstrates an attitude already deeply present within the organisation and continues in the direction already taken in previous editions.

ITRA Green Commitment label

Dall’edizione 2024, la CAMPO DEI FIORI TRAIL adotta una serie di actions following the main guidelines of the ITRA (International Trail Running Association) Green Commitment label“ which can be summarised as follows:

  • Respect and preserve nature
  • Seeking sustainability
  • Removing rubbish from paths
  • Reduce waste and prefer recyclable materials
  • Reducing emissions
  • Raise awareness among athletes, volunteers, sponsors and event partners about the importance of respecting the environment.

WHAT ARE WE ORGANISERS DOING TO BE SUSTAINABLE?

REDUCTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

For several years now, the organisation has been committed to reducing the environmental impact of the entire event.
This year, however, each choice is part of a broader strategy that includes a precise monitoring programme through the following actions:

  • DIGITALISATION OF COMMUNICATIONS, promotional materials, such as flyers and posters, and service materials such as athletes' registrations. All paper materials were eliminated, with the exception of safety signs (reusable) and athletes' bibs.
  • SUSTAINABLE TIMEKEEPING SERVICE  provided by sustainability-conscious partner Wedosport, with the use of solar energy sources and the use of reusable bib chips recovered at the end of the race.
  • CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF RACE TRACKS Thanks to the work of the Cleaning Forest Team volunteers who take care of the cleaning and maintenance throughout the year, so that the impact of the race on the forests that host it is practically nil and in some cases improving
  • EMPLOYEE GROUP INVOLVEMENT GREEN TEAM VIBRAM who will take part in the ILPEA 28k by acting as a “broom” at the end of the race and taking care of waste collection on the race course, thus safeguarding the natural park that hosts the race and confirming the deep concern that the Albizzate-based company has for the Varese area.

WE WILL WORK FOR CARBON NEUTRALITY

The event involves thousands of people from more than 30 foreign countries. For promoting more sustainable transport, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions,
we will provide bike storage on Saturdays.
As last year, the emissions of the vehicles used during the event (minibuses and service cars) will be monitored in order to record their impact. The big news this year is the partnership with GRUPPO NOVAUTO and MARELLI&POZZI who will provide full electric vehicles for transporting athletes and supplies for refreshments. In addition, for food and drink, whenever possible, were selected “Zero Km” products” so as to reduce emissions during the transfer of goods.

REDUCTION WASTE (ZERO WASTE TARGET)

  • Along the paths, a temporary fabric signs, removed at the end of the race and reused in subsequent editions, such as the road signs and structures used to set up the Trail Village, which are kept and reused in the next edition.
  • The use of plastic cups and bottles will be restricted with the specific aim of reducing disposable waste and encouraging the use of personal and reusable cups, jugs and water canisters. Water will be supplied from public sources having set up refreshment stations near public taps
  • No competition bags intended as containers will be distributed. The gadgets, made from polyester thread obtained by recycling used plastic bottles, will be hand-delivered to the athletes in order to also give them tangible impressions of the value of the products provided. There will also be no printed brochures and flyers, but communication or collaboration will be developed with digital tools.
  • Collaborations with friendly competitions in the field of eco-sustainability are activated. The Swiss competition “Scenic Trail” provided in 2023 useful gadgets to make up the compulsory equipment that every athlete will have to carry with them during the race: a reusable cup, or an emergency thermal towel promoted by Scenic Trail. With friendly races manage and share excess material at the end of the event.
  • Boys and girls participating in the Minitrail will be rewarded with a medal made of recycled cardboard laminated with FSC-certified paper (material from recycling and recovery), with an earth pod and seeds inside which, watered regularly, will give rise to a beautiful seedling.
  • The food not distributed in the refreshments and surplus at the end of the event will be donated to the ONLUS Charity In The World which will take it directly to families in need of help.

REPORT WRITING OBJECTIVE

During the event rwe will take all the most significant data for the environmental impact assessment and produce a report that will allow us to quantify the sustainability of our event and allow us to improve each year.

THE PARTNERS

On this new journey, the Campo dei Fiori is of course not alone. collaborations with grassroots producers and local businesses that care about sustainability and the circular economy.
Several local producers in addition to those already mentioned will support the Campo dei Fiori Trail:

  • Squirrel Fresh Pasta of Lonate Ceppino, which will provide its new protein-filled ravioli for the volunteers' lunch;
  • At the Borducan Romantic Hotel & Love Restaurant with the Elixir bitter made in the artisanal way by combining the scent of orange with the aromas of natural herbs from the Campo dei Fiori of Sacro Monte
  • Salumificio Colombo of Crosio della Valle will be present at all refreshment stations with delicious-tasting cold cuts;
  • Cardy confectionery of Gavirate will provide homemade cakes and biscuits to delight all palates, and its famous Brutti ma Buoni meringue and hazelnut biscuits for the awards ceremony;

WHAT CAN YOU AS AN ATHLETE DO TO BE SUSTAINABLE?

  • TRANSPORT
    Travelling by collective means of transport, your bike or carpooling with your teammates to reach the start
  • WASTE
    Do not litter the trails with rubbish such as gel packaging or bars, or paper tissues. Remember to label your products with your bib number (see info on mandatory material)
  • GLASSES
    No plastic cups will be distributed at the refreshment stations, so bring your own reusable cup. If you don't have one, go to the Campo dei fiori trail stand in the village to buy one and use it in this and subsequent races.

WHAT CAN YOU AS AN EXHIBITOR DO TO BE SUSTAINABLE?

  • STAND FITTINGS
    When setting up your stand, limit the use of non-reusable materials destined for disposal, favour energy-efficient and low-consumption lighting (e.g. LED)
    and reusable or recyclable fittings and furnishings
  • LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT
    Where possible, it selects suppliers and materials according to the distance of supply and the type of means used for transport
  • WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL
    Do not abandon waste. During the set-up and dismantling periods, special waste - cardboard or mixed material packaging, scrap wood, panels, cellophane - must be removed from the Village.
